This class is for industry professionals, digital imaging technicians, assistant colorists and newer colorists. It is intermediate level and there will be multiple Red Cine-X stations to demonstrate and use.

Agenda

  • DAY ONE
    • Overview of Color Correction On-Set
      • You’re the first person to see and evaluate the quality of the images just created,  You back-up the data, apply a one-lite colour grade for offline material and give feedback to the set Informing them of issues or concerns
    • Color Theory
      • Looking at the histogram, waveform, vectorscope.  How do you judged a good exposure and relay this back to the Director of Photography?
    • Concepts of Digital Film and Raw Cinematography
      • Brief history of digital film and the advantages of shooting RAW
    • Setting Up your Computer and Environment
      • Hardware and software solutions for working on-set including data back-up, colour correction and offline media generation
    • Monitors and Displays
      • How to set-up a monitor for on set viewing and evaluation
    • Terminology
      • Introduction to 10bit log, 4:4:4, Pro Res, DNxHD, r3ds, Color Spaces
    • Analyzing Images
      • What to look for when you’re doing quality control and one-light colour grading
    • Color Grading with Red in Practice
      • Understand the image processing order of the colour grading tools including settings for Demosaic, Matrix and LUT
  • DAY TWO
    • What Is An On-Set Colorist
      • Define what your job is and how you fit in the process.  How to communicate with the Director, Director of Photography, camera crew and post.
    • Matching Shots
      • Match brightness, contrast, white balance and hue from a master shot to coverage
    • Colorist Strategies
      • You are there to provide a front-line level of colour expertise.   How to work with the camera department
    • Looks and Styles
      • Show the Director, Director of Photography some options on-set that they can live with during the offline process
    • Film and Television Reference Looks
      • Fun looks to try on set
    • Hands On
      • Students will have Red Cine-X software at each station to practice and get comfortable with the media and strategies and operations.
    • Client Relations
      • This industry is all about communication.  How do you communicate in a team environment.
